Conyers Teen Takes Flight: Miller Watkins Earns Aviation Scholarship, Eyes Career in the Skies

Conyers Georgia, April 2026 – Miller Watkins has received a scholarship from the Lyons Aviation Foundation in support of his pursuit of a Private Pilot License, as he prepares to enter Ohio State University’s Aviation program.

Miller’s path to aviation started with his grandfather, a Vietnam Air Force veteran who took him to air shows when he was young. One of his earliest memories was the feeling of awe as he watched the Blue Angels perform at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. That image never left him.

His first discovery flight at fifteen confirmed what he already knew. He gained more flight hours through the OBAP Delta Academy and then knew that aviation would be his career.

Miller has already exemplified the kind of hard work and self-directed initiative that will be required to become a professional pilot. He is a multi-sport athlete in varsity football and track & field, serving as both captain and chaplain on those teams. He overcame obstacles to become a Certified Toastmasters Speaker through the Young Black Leadership Alliance, and manages to find time to work part time as a pool manager and lifeguard as well.

Miller has a track record of hard work, gratitude, and leadership. The Lyons Aviation Foundation is confident he will make his way to the flight deck gracefully, and will work to keep the door open for those coming behind him.

The Lyons Aviation Foundation is proud to support him on that journey.

About The Lyons Aviation Foundation:

The Lyons Aviation Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non profit private foundation that exists to support and encourage the next generation of pilots and aviators through offering financial scholarships to deserving young persons who are pursuing their Private Pilot Certificate. The Lyons family has been involved in and maintained a history of aviation-related careers for over 67 years.  The Lyons Aviation Foundation story started with Rolf C. Lyons, when he entered military service at the age of 17, enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1955, with his sons later following in his footsteps. This foundation was born out of a desire to give back to the aviation community and the future pilots, mechanics, and engineers working in the field by providing an opportunity to those that might not otherwise have the means to pursue aviation as a career path.  This foundation is a living tribute to a family story and its ties to aviation, military service, and one another.  More information can be found at www.lyonsaviation.org.
